The issue is specific to kde - switching keyboard mappings in other window
managers does not create any issues. If Miklos is right and attempting to remap
the shortcut restores the balance, the issue seems to be that KDE somehow
silently binds these key combinations internally, and thus intercepts the
events. The event is generated by X, but it does not reach the applications.
