This known and nasty problem disappeared (again for Fedora-F17)
iff you upgrade akmod-nvidia and xorg-x11-drv-nvidia to version
302.17-1.fc18, taken from the rawhide.

This a little bit strange solution also worked for me
on the same problem with Fedora-15.

It seems to be a linking problem
