Hi Dan,

I had similar problems with my notebook / HDMI settings. One day I had two
black screens and could not get the picture back...

For me, the solution was to edit file
.kde/share/config/krandrrc
and set
ApplyOnStartup=false

All fine since then - KDE detects if HDMI is connected or not and sets
resolution accordingly. Just give it a try.
