What this "default application" module does is just update some global flags
that all KDE applications will/should respect. If you find some KDE application
does respect that, it is a valid bug. But there is no guarantee non-KDE
applications will also respect those flags when running in the KDE environment.
Firefox/Thunderbird  are also fameous for having their own independent
settings.

Anyway, I also use thunderbird as my preferred mail client, and all KDE
applications I use respect that setting.
