his problem happened today to me, too. I'm using KDE 4.7.2.

$ uname -a
Linux meshedgedx 3.0.0-sabayon #1 SMP Tue Aug 30 17:17:33 BST 2011 x86_64
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU Q 720 @ 1.60GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

I wanted to edit the KDE Menu entries for LibreOffice Calc, to add an export
command (export OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=gnome) to the existing command, as it is not
possible to scroll horizontally with LibreOffice Calc in KDE (see e.g.
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=971718#p971718). However, when I
made the change to the KDE Menu entries for LibreOffice Calc and LibreOffice
Base using kmenuedit, LibreOffice Calc and LibreOffice Base then disappeared
from the KDE Menu completely. And the file associations have disappeared from
System Settings > File Associations, too.

I have tried kbuildsycoca4 --noincremental but it made no difference.
