Done the test on my machine (Kubuntu 11.04, KDE 4.6.3). It's defnitely the
Power Management Service. 

RSS and VSIZE behave normally until the Power Management Service is enabled
(see below at 8:28:59).

My laptop also has a shot battery (reports 25% capacity) so that may also be a
factor.
