I was able to resolve my problem. The upgrade to Ubuntu 11.04 did not install
the "plasma-desktop" package. Once I installed that I was able to log in to
KDE.

I still needed to log in to a different type of session first and disable all
display effects before I could get in to KDE, but at least I can log in to KDE
now.
