The observation that kded4's memory consumption is related to the graphics
driver / graphics configuration is rather interesting!

Out of curiosity I started X using fbdev instead of the Intel graphics driver
and kded4 seems to be behaving a lot better this way.

However, there are quite a few differences between the Intel and the fbdev
configuration, as fbdev does not provide any acceleration and DRI and does not
seem to support multihead, so

a) it's no option for "real" everyday usage and
b) it's hard to tell which of the differences causes kded4 to consume different
amounts of memory.

At least the compositor is also enabled with fbdev, though it's not using
OpenGL in this case, of course.

My stats with fbdev after a few hours of usage:
