Does it work when you click on the video before pressing Esc? It is possible
that the window is not activated when going full screen.

Additionally, you might try KDE 4 (which is actually the only supported KDE
version in Kubuntu 10.10), as if it turns out to be a KDE bug, then probably
nobody will go back to KDE 3 to fix it.
