Since KDE-4.4.4 the spell checking (mainly kmail) doesn't work anymore. Even in
the system settings, you can choose languages but the window with available
spell checkers is empty. Seems KDE cannot recognize ispell or aspell as being
installed.

up to KDE-4.4.3 it worked perfectly.

System is up to date. No more significant changes during those updates. Ispell
and aspell including their dictionaries are up to date. 

Same on my netbook which got installed recently, after KDE-4.4.4 launched.

Spell checker to be selectable in system settings and subsequently work as
before until KDE-4.4.3
