It is possibly linked to a bug in xserver-xorg-input-evdev.  I ran into this
every so often with Kubuntu Karmic on my desktop.  I don't know the upstream
bug or patch information, but look at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-input-evdev/+bug/475718
to see if it is relevant.  I am running with the ppa version of evdev and
haven't seen a problem all weekend.
