The plasma desktop did not re-appear when I killed nautilus, but did briefly
when when I logged out.  I'm pretty sure the gnome desktop just took precedence
over kde - On logging in again I haven't been able to reproduce the issue.  

I'm presuming that the problem must have another factor that I haven't pinned
down yet rather than being simply dependent on opening a file in gedit from
nautilus in kde.  I had a lot of problems with gnome window styles overriding
my KDE ones in (k)ubunutu 8.10 + kde 4.2.2 but 9.04 + kde 4.2.2 seems much more
stable.
