Bingo, I found the cause of this: bug 185225
Look at bug 185225 comment 3: if any application is crashing here it means it
is buggy indeed. Changing that malloc check will avoid their crashes..
Marking as duplicate. We are going to "fix" the issue on 4.3trunk too
