I can reproduce the same problem with Kanotix Excalibur ( = modified Debian
Lenny) using KDE 4.2.3

My System is set to "Autologin". When I log out and log in again, my keyboard
suddenly works (without changing any settings!). The same is true if I disable
autologin completly and just type in my password when the system starts up. In
this case, my keyboard works just from the start.

When I start the system with autologin enabled ( = keyboard is NOT working in
KDE), then open Konsole and start "evtest" for one of my keyboards (builtin
laptop keyboard and external USB keyboard), both seem to work in evtest, but
none of them is working as normal KDE keyboard.

I should also mention that I got the keyboard working just by playing with the
keyboard settings in System-Settings -> Regional & Language -> Keyboard Layout.
However, I could not reproduce this.

nice greets
