Summary: SIGSEGV crashes in a number of applications (Kaffeine,
Kwrite, Knotes, Open Office Write, at least)
           Product: kde
           Version: 3.5
          Platform: Mandriva RPMs
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: crash
          Priority: NOR
         Component: general
        AssignedTo: unassigned-bugs at kde.org
        ReportedBy: mandriva at b0lus.com

Version: (using KDE 3.5.9)
OS: Linux
Installed from: Mandriva RPMs

Kaffeine crashes immediately after opening (onscreen just long enough to see
icons) with SIGSEGV error.
Amarok crashes as soon as music begins to play (which happens automatically
within a few seconds) - no error message.
Kwrite, Knotes and Open Office Write all crash with SIGSEGV error if a Save is
attempted - in the case of Open Office it is the File Picker that reports the
error. With this one KDE has tended to lock up completely and the power button
is the only way out. I haven't yet used all the available applications but
those are the only ones so far that have problems.

I have gone through a number of possibilities with Adam Williamson in the
Mandriva forums (thread: http://forum.mandriva.com/viewtopic.php?t=97252) and
it was he that prompted me to file this report.

The installation (Mandriva 2008.1) is virtually a new one and I have applied
every update available. The only relatively unusual feature is Virtualbox with
a Windows VM, but the crashes occur even when this is not loaded.

I also note, when using verbose mode on shutdown, that the ALSA driver fails to
shut down because a process is using it; some detective work has identified
Pulse Audio as this process, but killing it makes no difference.
