Summary: KDE locks up and fails to respond to users
           Product: kde
           Version: unspecified
          Platform: Slackware Packages
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: crash
          Priority: NOR
         Component: general
        AssignedTo: unassigned-bugs kde org
        ReportedBy: garry.hurley.jr gmail com

Version: 4.0.2 (using KDE 4.0.2)
Installed from: Slackware Packages
Compiler: GCC 4.1.2 This is the x86_64 version of the application
OS: Linux

When starting KDE 4.0.1 and 4.0.2 the Xorg Server crashes. The system does not lose the KDE desktop display, which may lead users to think that KDE has in fact locked up. I have found that the ways to fix this are as follows:

1. Use the Vesa driver. The r300 driver for Radeon chipsets seems to be broken and lead to problems in xorg 1.4.0.90. (This may be a bug to report on X.org as well.) I did try the standard VGA driver, and it worked, but the problem seems to be solved with the vesa driver. We should always default to the higher standard.

2. Set your resolution in your xorg.conf file to 1024x768 at the highest OR set the color depth to 16 bits instead of 24.

KDE 4 still locks up on some applications, and if the wireless networking module is removed (by user action or system action) KDE seems to lock up. The hardware and OS version details are listed below:

Gateway MT6452 laptop (AMD Turion 64X2 TL52, 2GB PC5400 RAM, Radeon XPress 1150 video, RTL8187 wireless, AMD HD Audio - uses Intel HD driver)
Slamd64 Linux (current source tree, version from 2-14-08)
