Dropping automake/autoconf support for 1.6.2

Hmm, OpenSuse 11.2 works. Same libtool and automake, but autoconf 2.63. 
If I build the configure script on my OpenSuse machine it also then 
properly compiles on Ubuntu (9.10). I'm poking around to see if I can 
spot the difference...
