Subject: KDE Applications 18.07.90 (18.08-rc) packages available for packagers

Hello packagers,

*.tar.xz files are available at the usual "unstable" location.

Many changes since the beta, please test thoroughly.


     I got errors while packaging 'kdepim-runtime'
     (for LANG in: es it nl ru uk):

     cp: cannot stat 
'/home/pkgapplications/release-tools/l10n5/$LANG/docs/./pim/kioslave5/pop3'$'\n''./kdepim-runtime/kioslave5/pop3/*': 
No such file or directory


     Any idea if this is needs to be fixed by i18n or kdepim team?


Please report issues, release for the RC is planned tomorrow.

I guess the first set (lowercase destination directory) is incorrect.

But can we stop installing these headers? It shouldn't break anything using KHolidays *correctly*,
but it might break apps that use incorrect includes (like #include <kholidays/Zodiac>) or incorrect
include paths (#include <Zodiac> with only kholidays/ in the include path, but well, linking to KF5Holidays
should bring automatically the right include paths).

This has now been fixed in https://phabricator.kde.org/D14754

The patch is simple enough, if you want to grab it. We didn't check yet 
whether it breaks anything else using kholidays [wrongly], hopefully not.

Hi,
there is no minimum required KF5 version for Applications, afaik. You can 
require the most recent KF5 as long as you bump the dependency in cmake 
before the dependency freeze of the next Applications release.

Technically this is correct and if it is needed, than no way to argue against 
depending on the newest Framework version as dependency. Because the idea of 
the monthly releases it that you as Applications do not need to hold 
workarounds for bugs in Frameworks.

On the other side please think about distributions. If the dependencies are 
unnecessary high if may result in a delay for distributions to ship your 
application. I recommend to be inform in advanced if you need such a new 
Frameworks so distributions can prepare better for this.

KDE Pim depend on 5.47 Frameworks for Applications 18.08 and we do updating 
this dependency by tooling (me personally do not like this automatic bump). So 
other applications can use the same dependency...

Wait, we really need 5a5d3ee27 (from akonadi git repo) in 18.08 as well,
to avoid a data loss in at least one non-KDE application based on Akonadi
[and possibly in korganizer/kaddressbook/etc. as well, I didn't check].

That's a question for Dan -- CC'ed him again, somehow this got lost ;)

Overall I have the feeling that those large changes in akonadi might need a 
bit more testing indeed.

as far as I know this was the last issue we had fixed that would've broken PIM 
for many users. No doubt there will be more fixes after Akademy, that nothing 
critical is left in pipeline are think (IOW David can read and send emails and 
use FatCRM).

I'm really sorry for the late fixes, I haven't realized the release was *this* 
close and Akademy was a perfect place to sit down with people who can actually 
reproduce theses issues and debug them.

I think you can go forth with the release (including 5a5d3ee27 from akonadi) .

I'd vote for including kmail's 8316c7a83 as well, to at least have a hidden 
way to prevent a feature regression.

Now that 18.08 is done let's finally move this forward.

The KIO dependency has been refactored away, so this is now a tier 2 
functional framework.

Unless there are objections we'd like to move KF5Syndication from PIM to KF5 
before the 18.12 dependency freeze (ie. in to the KF5 September or October 
releases). 

Same procedure as with the KF5Holidays move, it's an ABI-compatible drop-in 
replacement for what's shipped with 18.08.

In addition, there's a major regression in akonadi which gets stuck at some 
point when moving emails. I sent details to Dan and I'm trying to help 
debugging it, but right now releasing akonadi 18.08 would be a major step back 
compared to 18.04.

KDE Applications 18.08.0 was released last Thursday.

So you really need to tell distros if there's something very wrong with akonadi.

I'm a bit appeased today after the bug not happening for the whole day for me
[and only once for my wife]. I have added better ways to debug it when it 
happens, and the obvious workaround (restarting akonadi) actually works.

So yeah, maybe not as critical as I thought, life can go on, we'll still need 
to fix it :-)

I'm trying to get things going again.

I've been having a play with a python wordpress xmlrpc library, adding
pages/blogs is super super easy.

I can either write a wrapper script that takes title/date/whatever and a
path to a textfile to upload, or we can mod scripts to upload directly.
Release scripts will still need some tweaking for new formatting syntax and
to remove cruft like manually inserting headers and footers.

Can you (Frameworks release mangers and Applications release managers) link
me to your scripts and I'll be happy to work on those changes.

Maybe do this in a branch (e.g. "frameworks" to get rid of that version number

This has been done and is reflected in the CI, the dependency meta data and 
the versioning now. Just the release flag is still missing.

Good question. IIUC kapidox generates this from cmake --graphviz, and that 
locally shows me no references to KIO (nor does grep'ing the syndication 
repo). Outdated checkout/dirty build dir on the API docs build machine maybe?

If memory serves it uses results from the CI system, so should be
reasonably up to date.
However i'm not sure what logic it relies on (the API site generation
system needs an overhaul as mentioned at Akademy, i'm not sure how
this all works)
