I haven't looked at the code, however when the kwin tabbing was first announced I read somewhere(I'll try to find it and put the reference here), that this feature had no API for programs to create kwin tabs. So IF my information is correct, what you're asking for can't be done.

If anyone has information on an API to access/create/modify kwin tabs please correct me.

On Tue, Mar 9, 2010 at 1:16 PM, Lionel Chauvin <megabigbug@yahoo.fr> wrote:
Here are our interogations about the feasability:
-Is it possible to detect if the window manager support grouping ?
-Is it possible to dynamically set kwin for use/not use this feature ?
-Is it possible to create several groups for one application ? (for instance
two groups with two tabs)
-Can the taskbar group tasks in the same way as kwin group windows?
