<p>That's a fair point.<br />
Another fair point: Why not just pick an image that doesn't really interfere with the boxes and icons that much then you don't need blur at all.</p>
<p>That being said, I personally prefer blur - it's just a matter of taste. The added bonus with the blur is the "effect" or "animation" (more like, the time needed for it to show up and disappear later on). Not to belabor the point (too much) but I've also been using ImageSplash (a splash screen that uses an image instead of an actual splash screen) to bridge the gap between the login screen and the desktop, and you get a very smooth transition from login to desktop with both blur and non-blur when it disappears (and my graphics drivers decide <em>not to glitch</em>), check it out you might like it:</p>
