Yep, you definitely can with the fglrx driver at least. I have it running on my laptop, with 1920x1200 on the left, 1280x1024 on the right. Xinerama just assumes the height and width are 2*1920x2*1200 though. Maximizing windows also works with sane behaviour on both screens.
