When I click on the "get new wallpapers" button in plasma's desktop settings a window opens and tries to load the previews, which causes a whole bunch of kio_file processes.

However the previews are not loaded, but plasma freezes, i.e. clicking on the panel does not do anything, neither can I close the window.

After killing plasma, the kio_file processes are left behind as zombies.

.xsession-errors shows:

"Keine Verbindung zu" means "no connection to"
