Hello Nikku,

Your reason for trying owncloud, is the same reason I started using it. You want to be able to securely access your data from multiple locations.

1. The only install documentation we have so far is this: http://owncloud.org/index.php/Installation#Windows

You should know that installing this application will require setting up your own webserver (like apache or IIS). There are many websites with installation instructions for those webservers.

2. Yes, you can run owncloud on Windows 7. Owncloud is not specific to just Linux.

3. Owncloud is accessible from any device with internet access. This includes Blackberry, iPhone, Android phones, and any smart phone. You can either use the web interface to access owncloud or any webdav client.

Let us know if you have any other questions.

- Jeff Gibbs

On Mon, Jul 11, 2011 at 10:23 PM, Nikku <nikku1@gmail.com> wrote:

Hello

Recently I've become interested in making my data available on multiple devices in multiple locations. I have a few concerns about Dropbox and others like it. I found out about Owncloud. My questions are these.

1. Does there exist a document somewhere on the net that explains in 'laymans' terms how to implement Owncloud for a user who is technically minded and relatively conversant in computere-ese but most definitely not a programmer?

2. To run Owncloud, do I need to be running Linux on my home rig? The reason I ask is that I know 'kde' as a front end for Linux. I currently run Windows 7.

3. I have recently switched from a Blackberry to an iPhone 4 for my mobile computing. I am not 100% convinced about the iPhone but right now it is so much more functional than my Blackberry was that I'm not turned off yet. I will be considering Android in the future. Can you tell me if Owncloud is optimized in such a way as to make it easy for iPhone users to access their data in the cloud?

I will understand if the you cannot answer this email. I will continue to try to get information on my own. Basically I am looking for a secure solution for cloud storage that is relatively easy for a non-tech expert to implement.
