>From a "system tray" point of view, that should not matter. Even if there's no 
system tray, the icon should still appear (albeit in a random position). Th 
mechanism works as follows: Application exports an XWindow of 22x22, the shell 
(or system tray host if you wish) then repositions this window.

So it's worth investigating if this really is a race condition in GNOME 
startup, or if it's just a random other bug.

I've never seen this happen. Which version are you using?
