Greetings

I am Divesh Kumar 3rd year student at BITS Pilani, India pursuing BE EEE
and MSc. Math and I am looking forward to participating in GSOC 2020 and
contribute to KDE.

First of all, I didn’t know how to contact you hence I choose to mail you
if you would like for me to contact via any other medium do let me know.

I have been using Okular for a year now and love it for its customizable
nature and many other features. I wanted to discuss a feature that I would
like to see in Okular. Below I have tried to describe my idea.

While using the highlighter annotation in the app we can’t highlight nonOCR
pages/text using the highlighter annotation for that we have to switch to
freehand line/ straight line this leads to unnecessary interrupts while
using documents that have a high number of nonOCR text or images like this
image.

Here since the text below is nonOCR hence to highlight it I have to change
my annotations from highlighter(yellow) to freehand(green).

I think incorporating this would result in a massive productivity spike of
many users. Such a free-form highlighter would also need to have the
ability to highlight in straight lines when needed as a normal hand will
create shaky lines this can be done by using a key(eg Ctrl or Shift) along
with the highlighter. Such annotations already exist in apps like Adobe
Acrobat Reader wherein the rectangular highlighter is converted to a
circular for when it is placed over nonOCR text or images and allows users
to highlight nonOCR images and text.

This is the Adobe implementation of this.

You can also look into the following discussions about this in the Adobe
community.

https://community.adobe.com/t5/acrobat-reader/acrobat-dc-highlighting-how-to-highlight-in-a-straight-line/td-p/8332895?page=1

I hope to hear what you think about my recommendation.

Thank you for all that beautiful code you guys have been writing for years.

Yours sincerely Divesh Kumar.
