Hi Vladimir

The problem you are seeing, my guess is that it is inherent to USNO NOMAD. I believe this is because the catalog was constructed programmatically from images, so the sequence of stars that you see around bright stars are from the diffraction spikes or CCD blooming in the image being detected as stars. I don’t think it’s a bug in KStars. I’ll have to read up more about the catalog to confirm this.

Regards

Akarsh

On Sat, Sep 11, 2021 at 22:05 Jasem Mutlaq <mutlaqja@ikarustech.com> wrote:

Hello Vladimir,

First of all, nice work!! The experience is very smooth, though you
can perhaps improve the pre-caching so that adjacent areas are fetched
before the user starts panning around.

Regarding NOMAD, this was imported in ~2008 by Akarsh if I remember
correctly. I have no idea on the specific details, it was using some
text --> binary converted to index the trixels among other data. Maybe
something happened during the import process? Are the duplicated stars
in the binary itself?

I'm including the KStars development list in this conversation so that
Akarsh and others may shed some light on this. Love the project!
