Moving my existing rc file allows me to work around the problem
and I now have a functioning kstars !! Thank You.

I have attached my before and after rc files. I diff'd them but
saw nothing that meant anything to me. Since I know virtually
nothing of the internals of kstars, that is a low bar. Maybe you
or someone else can find a clue in them.

I haven't a clue as to what went wrong, but after following your
advice and redownloading my data files all is well. I still have
my Ekos profiles. No more snaps for me.

Again,

Thank you.

Well, it does seem like KStars is finding some of the
object databases. We do see, for example, that it did find and
load some star databases (unnamedstars.dat, deepstars.dat
...).

I'm hoping that we deprecated the GL backend, and it isn't
being used. One thing you can try is to see if removing your
config file helps and reintroduce the non-problematic lines of
the config file that you care about back. Your config should
be found in ~/.config/kstarsrc on Linux machines. Not sure
what the equivalent path is on other OSes.
works, and I just discovered the "HiPS all sky survey"
overlay, which is AWESOME).
