Plate Solving on MacOS

Hi Peter,

I don’t believe there are any issues currently with using the current KStars on a Silicon Mac. Rosetta works pretty well and it performs well as far as I have been told. You said you are having trouble with Plate Solving. Plate solving is complex and we would need to know more details to know what any issue might be. It is much simpler now that I have made StellarSolver and integrated it, there are no more configuration file issues, most of the settings are handled automatically unless you want to change them, and there are not any issues with netpbm or python etc that we used to have with astrometry.net <http://astrometry.net/>. If you are having trouble, I would encourage you to make sure you are using the Internal Solver, that you are using either the “Default” profile or the “Parallel Small Scale” profile for plate solving, that you have downloaded the correct index files in the index file downloader for your system, and that you enable alignment logging to make sure you know what the solver is doing so you can diagnose any problems. Then if you have trouble solving, you can disable either the “use scale” or “use position” options (or both) to blind solve, since there could easily be an issue with your scale parameters or mount position. Then let me know if you need more help.

Thanks,

Rob

I solely use kStars on MacOS (for years now) and have seen some bug appear here and there but in it has always been fixed and improved. Thank you.

I am running MacOS and kStars on the newer Mac-Silicon. Does anyone know whether this is a known MacOS/Rosetta2 issue, or could it be set-up specific?

>> Thanks for the report. Ok for the issue that you identified that I was able to address, I think this should take care of it at least for now, which is the Help button. The issue appears to be that for some reason KHelpClient is not working properly on MacOS, which is another underlying package over which we have no control. I was able to confirm your error and I found that every instance where it was accessed the same problem occurred. I don’t know why this is, but based on what I observed from some testing I just did on Linux to see what it is supposed to do, the only thing this button is supposed to do is bring up the KStars Handbook online. This is not very hard to do with other tools that we have in KStars, so I think the best solution is just to access it using one of the other tools. So I did a little work and this should fix the issue on MacOS while leaving the other distributions unchanged. I will wait to see if it causes any other issues on other systems, but it should not.

Yes, perhaps this should be addressed, but since most of the users and the developers are astrophotographers, Ekos tends to get all the love. Hopefully we can address that better.
