If my memory serves well, we've usually been doing both at the same
time. During the "KPA Development Sprint" which happened in September
2008, quite a lot of changes happened to the "internal architecture" of
the DB interface (the DB::ResultSet and DB::ResultId classes, IIRC), but
some of us were doing general development during that time, too.

Another example might be when Tuomas Suutari introduced the SQL backend
for the first time.

I haven't been around for most of the KPA's history though, so I can't
comment about stuff that happened in 2006 or earlier.

I'll leave finding out the apropriate revision numbers as an excercise
for you :).
