This could explain why I'm seeing emoticons from a friend although we both have
turned off emoticons (untick "use the following emoticon theme" in chat
window->emoticons - is there any other way to turn them off?). The only
solution to this seems to be to turn on "disable user-defined rich text" and
then smileys are replaced with an empty string. I want smileys, but NOT
graphical ones. This is a bad bug and needs to be fixed.
