Further investigation shows that if the initial working directory is specified
with no tildes (e. g. "/home/tim/somewhere" instead of "~/somewhere") new tabs
are opened in that specified directory.

  This is very weird since:

a) the default value was "~/Dokumente" (with tilde),
b) there was no warning when I changed that to "~/somewhere", and
c) there was no error when I opened a new tab.
