The delay is not present when using a scalable font.

My configure flags are:

./configure -qt-gif -no-exceptions -fast -prefix $QTDIR -nomake examples -nomake demos

This is Qt 4.3.3 without any third party patches.

KDE was built with:

cmake $SOURCE/$module -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=$KDEDIR -DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=release
