I've tried this fix on a Mandriva 2006 system, which has utempter 0.5.5, and it looks like utempter will need upgrading to the latest version for my hack to work.  It's available via http://freshmeat.net/projects/libutempter/.

Meanwhile, if no patch for KDE is forthcoming, I will attempt to write one and post it here if I have any success.
