File extensions may be irrelevant when downloading from the web, as 
downloaded "blobs" have a type associated with them, and even that 
sometimes has problems making the correct association.  Once you simply 
have a file on a local file system, on Linux, there is no associated 
type, other than the file extension.  The "file" utility will try (and 
often succeed) in guessing the file's type by looking at the first 
several bytes of the file, but very few programs actually use that on 
files they open.  They either assume it is the appropriate type, or 
guess based on the extension.
