odd entries in payees

That is how double-entry-accounting (doppelte Buchführung) works. You have
a split in one account and another split in the counter-account (Gegenkonto).
The sum of all splits in a transaction must be zero. If that is not the case,
KMyMoney warns you with a yellow triangle. Category, in case of KMyMoney, is
just a synonym for income/expense accounts (Sachkonto).

Not at all, because it's needed ! No seriously, try upgrading to a newer version.
I don't remember details, but that could already been solved.
