I think I might have misunderstood both Raph Levien's comments on his
previously quoted natural brush page, and the Gimp's source code (not hard to
misunderstood, that). Judging from the documentation and code of the Seashore
OS X gimp clone, the temporary layer where the brush masks are painted is as
big as the layer one seems to be painting on; and the (whole? changed rect?)
temporary layer is only composited using the chosen composite method on
mouse-up.

This would explain the behaviour Patrick saw in the Gimp and the preview
windows; the delayed updating of the preview window wouldn't be due to not
updating from the tiles and painting the window directly, but due to the
delayed pasting of the temporary layer. At least, that seems likely.

Maybe I'll experiment a bit with a bigger temporary layer tonight, because I
need some more elbow room for the effects of the pipe brushes anyway.
