Another thing which might be of interest on this matter is that you can make 
kate write so-called "modelines" to files (there's an option which you can 
enable). That's the same like the kateconfig files, but on a per-file basis.
You can also write those by hand: Just putting # kate: replace-tabs off at the 
end of a file and saving it will make the editor use tabs instead of spaces, 
regardless of other settings.
