Currently we don't have a job-based status bar UI at all. It's just getting update notifications by random signals from objects that are based off of IStatus (i.e. plugins, etc).
In libkdepim, were the original code of that statusbar-framework was from it's done right. There you can actually register jobs which are tracked in the status bar individually. Also, the displayed jobs can be actually canceled as well. Amarok has a nice framework for this task as well.
