I am back, after months of no problems -- I thought the issue was resolved, but just the other day, bingo, it's happening again. Kmail/Kontact stops delivering mail and seems to hang in a permanent loop of _checking_ for it (the little progress bar keeps going and going and going).

I am not positive this is part of the problem, but when I think back, it appears that this seems to occur around the time that a new version of Fedora is about to come out. Does that make any sense? For example, around the time that FC6 came out, I vaguely remember this problem occurring in my FC5 system. Now that FC9 is gearing up for release, suddenly this issue has reared its head in my FC8 system.

I don't know if others are having this problem but here are my symptoms:

1. Endless progress bar "checking for mail" with no mail delivery until I
quit and restart Kmail/Kontact.
2. Ancient emails reappear at certain times. I get 87 in my trash, 238 or so in another POP folder, and these reappear even if I click "Do not leave mails on server." It's like there are phantom emails out there that somehow reappear.
3. I have frequent sending issues where Kmail cannot connect to Comcast and I get a "this is a temporary error, try sending your mail again later." It stays in the Outbox and if I go in, open the mail again, and click send, it sends off just fine.

In my FC5 system this issue happens after several hours of Kmail being on. In my FC8 system, it takes only 30 minutes or even less sometimes before the system hangs.

The only thing I've done differently within the last week is to do the updates that came in. I do not know which ones were updated specifically, but it was 25 or so packages. Yesterday a kernel update required a
reboot, but the issue is still occurring.

Here are my system specifics:
Qt: 3.3.8b
KDE: 3.5.9-5.fc8 Fedora
KMail: 1.9.9
Kontact 1.2.9

If I can provide other info please let me know.
