There a number of reasons:

- in-memory search doesn't scale to large address books (LDAP, etc.)
- doing the searching client side means every searching client has to
duplicate the information in memory (the old addressbook lead to 5 or more
copies)
- there are many use cases for addressbook searching outside of the actual
address book
- it's faster (when it actually) works
- it can support semantic search ("give me the guy I sent the attachment with
the word "spongebob" in the title to last week")
- it can support semantic tagging
- supports higher level contact merging (like KPeople)
- various smaller bits and pieces

Simpler is, well, simpler ;)
