Interestingly, now I can switch back-and-forth between preferring HTML and
plain text, and the folder settings do not change any more.

This was the first time I changed the setting for preferred viewing format in a
long time. Is it possible that the setting was recorded in an older config file
format, and that this version of KMail didn't deal very well with it?
