I can confirm this with KMail 1.13.5 on KUbuntu 10.10 Maverick (KDE 4.5.1)

I just switched the other way, to prefer plain to HTML, made sure I clicked on
OK, and at least the following changed:

- message list aggregation to 'activity by date'. I have never had that setting
on any of my folders and don't know where it possibly came from
- theme to 'Classic', using columns 'subject', 'receiver', and 'date'. I used
'Fancy' for as long as I remember, probably since I've been on KDE 4

I didn't notice any change to the system tray (still disabled) or date (fancy)
settings that the original poster mentioned.
