This is technically a dupe of bug 16480, but since I didn't see one dev comment on it in 7 years, I thought I'd post a new bug. I have made a patch that implements options for prepending the users signature above the current text (which will intelligently change or return with identity changes) and for removing the -- in case people don't want the -- and for mail clients that strip signatures so they don't strip the quoted text as well. I have written a little more about it briefly on the gentoo forums:
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-4438034.html
and was promptly wontfixed on the gentoo bugzilla:

While I am confident that probably no dev has any interest in this bug and (it would seem) think that top posting is a sign of complete ignorance or stupidity, the fact is that many people use this practice and kmail not supporting the option won't change that, it will just make people use another email client or, gasp, another operating system. Casual users and casual conversations abound support this, but more specifically the entire business world. For kmail/KDE/linux to break into the mainstream it needs to have the features people want and are used to.
I have tested this through many scenarios and haven't found any bugs (after I squashed all the ones I found originally, of course), but am happy to do my best to fix any I haven't found.
