Well, for me, when there is no connection, KMail eventually displays the "host not found" error message box.

I think somehow KNetworkmanager missinforms the applications about wether they are online/offline. See bug 144816 (although this is the opposite case).

Simply type "kcmshell kcmkded" in a Konsole window. The rest should be self-explaining, just remove the checkbox from the network status daemon and stop it as well.
