i think some features of kdenlive need to removed to make the stabilizing a bit easier, such as its broken recording features. There is currently on linux no good recording library/program and to be honest it should not be the feature of kdenlive. We should concentrate on getting the basics to work solidly and efficiently first before adding such features, maybe making them plugins as well and not built in to the program.
As for fundraising, why not try crowdfunding such as kickstarter?
I am not really familiar with kdes architecture but i do recall some weird dependencies such as semantic-desktop. I think there is a lot of simplifying to be done.

About kdenlive stable/0.9:

Since summer I've tried to edit a few clips with kdenlive on Debian unstable
and it was crashing a bit too much. I hope it's not lagging behind some
ffmpeg/libav/mlt/kde/qt API changes which could explain these, but running
cppcheck and Coverity scan on the sources and fixing their findings would be
really good tasks for anyone interested. Also me.

About the Coverity kdenlive 'project': anyone can join in and I should be
able to approve applications to see kdenlive results (in addition to JB).

The master branch would benefit from similar scans as well. And maybe even
a valgrind run to catch memory problems...
