I find it hard to interpret colors as relative numbers (regarding<br>
background color). And I always want to see the relative value, not<br>

Though the advantage is that it does not take much space. But on the<br>
other hand I find tiny sliders generally a nuisance, or, to put it<br>
differently, big sliders are much more comfortable to work with.<br>
Better precision, better visualization of the current value.<br></blockquote><div><br>The problem I see with that system is that the interface will always have a heavy charge of colored rectangles visible.<br>Frankly I think I prefer any valid method for hiding/showing the standard sliders over any of the other proposals seen up to now.<br>

But couldn't we optimize the Effect Stack widget as well? Take a look<br>
at the screenshot above; Half of the space is empty.<br>
I did a quick sketch, which took about 100 times as long as it should<br>
have because of the packed unintuitivity in GIMP:<br>

- the effect stack area would tend to require big horizontal room to be comfortable used/understood.<br>- the selected effect parameters area would adapt well to this wide proportion, no doubt, BUT<br> - where do we place the panel then? Now, placed behind the Project Tree and beside the monitor panel, the space we have for that panel is usually more taller than wide, not the opposite. I don't think devoting more horizontal space to the effects stack/parameters is a good thing.<br>

This image shows two effects (named Stroke and Stroke 2), each one showing its parameters.<br>The effect has a control in the form of a little triangle to the left of each effect name (but could be + - signs of course) to expand/collapse the effect parameter visibility.<br>
This way, we could not only get rid of the current two column arrangement <i>[effects | parameters of selected effect]</i>, but also be able to do something we cannot currently do: tweak at the same time parameters of several (expanded) effects!<br>
