Can I just chime in and suggest implementing an importer/exporter for an existing standard such as the Final Cut Pro XML Interchange Format for importing/exporting projects, rather than devising a new one that would be used only by KDL/OpenShot:

http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/documentation/AppleApplications/Reference/FinalCutPro_XML/AboutThisDoc/AboutThisDoc.html

This of course assumes that the DTD would support a sufficient amount of Kdenlive's feature set (which, given that it's good enough for FCP which has a huge market share in the professional video editing market, I imagine it would be good enough for KDL) but I haven't read through it myself and I'm not familiar enough with KDL to say.

OpenShot recently added the possibility to import Kdenlive
projects but it simply adds the whole project as a clip, so it's not quite as useful as what you suggest. I haven't had a look at the openshot file format, but it most likely would also be an xml file, so converting between one format and the other should be possible, but probably not lossless (probably losing some information about transitions and effects and such).
Creating some sort of XML-based 'standard' (maybe better described as 'common') file format for the two apps would be great and would help prevent lockin to a single application.

I wonder if there already is one... Nice idea though; it'd make sense
considering that OpenShot can import Kdenlive project files now.
