Severe attenuation of preview audio (but rendered audio is okay)

Just maybe you have Kdenlive's playback volume turned down?
Under the monitor there are buttons, one is three horizontal stripes. Click
on that, and you will get the volume control:

You might also have per-application volume controls, click on the speaker
icon and make sure the volume control for Kdenlive is up all the way.

Sometimes it's the simple stuff, so start there?
