there, but it is very frustrating so I'm re posting here in case anyone 
can help!

I have a new installation of Ubuntu-Gnome 16.04 but it seems that 
Kdenlive is not recalling the saved window layout with projects.
I can save and load preset layouts OK but my layout is not recalled 
when I reopen a project.
Can anyone help or advise?

layout, is that correct?

Well-known issue with Qt.

1. Un-maximize Kdenlive window.
2. Resize window to use full screen, but don't use window decoration 
maximize function.
3. Set your layout/load layout.
4. Exit kdenlive.
5. Restart kdenlive; window will now be maximized, but layout should now 
be correct.

I'm looking forward to an nighlty build system for windows of kdenlive. I
would like to point out a new packaging tool for C++ by Microsoft.

It's called vcpkg and you can find more information here:
https://github.com/Microsoft/vcpkg/

Maybe it's an option to contribute the missing kde framework packages and
use vcpkg afterwards within the CI of kdenlive and the user guide for
compiling from source.

After a quick look some of the needed dependencies are already within vcpkg,
which helps gettings started.

This looks interesting,  but at the moment our Windows builds are done on
Linux, using MXE. So I don't know whether vcpkg can be of help.

There is some effort being put into building natively using Craft, but that
is not yet complete.

SNAP

Due to the current state of snap, which is evolving quickly and 
regularly breaks compatibility, the snap packages are not updated on a 
regular basis
A Snap package of latest stable release is available for supporting 
distros. To install:
sudo snap install --edge --devmode kdenlive
Then start the application from the command line: /bin/snap/kdenlive
To update your installed snap package:
sudo snap refresh kdenlive
The git master development version is available as “kdenlive-devel” 
instead of “kdenlive”.

Thanks for the warm welcome.

I posted the patches to phabricator as advised.

My patch is not a response to the March status update, but I read it
and it was good to see that the project was actively being developed
and to get an idea where it's heading.

I could offer some help to develop Kdenlive, e.g. starting with fixing
bugs or adding small features. At this point, I would not commit to
the bigger tasks mentioned in the status update.

We have a list of low hanging bugs [1] if you'd like to cherry pick one.
Avoid timeline related issues since those will go away after the
refactoring. But feel free to also browse through the bug tracker or
phabricator's feature proposals [2][3][4] in case you find something more
interesting to work on.

I haven't done a lot of work on windows specific bugs, nor did I test much (having only a VM and few minutes available for the tests :\ )
It only brings the latest Kdenlive bits, plus added gtk2 & sdl_image to the build, which hopefully solve most of image clips problems.
I also included a stripped FFmpeg version (no x264/x265 to avoid patent problems on KDE servers) which allows to work out of the box but exports only to webm.

Of course help would be appreciated for fixing the bugs, writing the release notes, updating documentation (quickstart guide, user manual)...

Enjoy... but don't expect too much either ;)

Hi guys. I compiled ffmpeg with the nvenc enabled to encode h264 and h265
videos using my nvidia gtx 1060 card.
I have a huge difference in transcoding 10x more. From 20/22 fps using
libx264 I passed to about 220/230 fps using nvenc.
Ok my Cpu is only an i5 750 and for my pc the GPU makes the difference. Now
I use a profile on kdenlive for transcode and resize the proxy clip using
ffmpeg nvenc enable with an improvement of more than 2x vs my CPU with
libx264.

So I ask at the MLT mailing list if I can use this encoding power in
rendering using MLT. Maybe compiling it with the ffmpeg nvenc enabled.
And they found this 2015 discussion.

Hi there.

I also transcode a lot of older video to x265 on my nVidia GTX 960 using
nvenc, and using the ffmpeg and the hardware encoder does make about an
order of magnitude difference on framerate during encoding.

To achieve this on Arch, I had to install ffmpeg-nvenc from aur, and have
the right hardware, of course.
I believe that mlt should pass through ffmpeg options, so if ffmpeg
supports it, mlt should too, without the need to recompile. Unfortunately I
am now far away from home, and my linux is running in a virtual machine and
I won't be able to test it for a couple of weeks. In Arch, at least,
mlt-git optionally depends on ffmpeg-nvenc, so in the worst case you might
have to recompile that, too.

Once the foundation is in place, it should be simple enough to have
kdenlive allow libnvenc in the rendering profiles. File a bug report saying
that kdenlive does not support all the encoders that mlt supports, and
point to the thread above. Be warned that you will have to do a lot of
troubleshooting on your own if using libnvenc breaks things for you. You
can even follow the same actions and generate a script from kdenlive, and
modify the encoder yourself and see if it works for you.

This piqued my interest.
Kdenlive does not appear to have a problem with a custom profile that calls
for a hardware encoder.

To create custom render profiles in kdenlive, just hit the "create new
profile" button in the render dialog. (No idea why you can't edit your
render dialogs in the settings menu, but there you go.)

I created a custom profile for hardware hevc encoding:
properties=x265-medium f=matroska vcodec=hevc_nvenc acodec=aac crf=%quality
ab=%audiobitrate+'k'

I had to clear out the speed options box, as the hardware encoder does not
have a concept of speed, and then I get this output in the render dialog:

NVIDIA: no NVIDIA devices found
[hevc_nvenc @ 0x7f265000c5e0] Cannot init CUDA

So, the profile passes along the requested video encoder, but of course I
don't have the right hardware on hand to actually encode anything.

In short, it appears to work without too much modification.
what is '-c:v ' in ffmpeg terms becomes 'vcodec=' in mlt terms, so you will
probably use 'vcodec=h264_nvenc' for hardware h264 video encode.

Subject: Wokflow for working with UHD and Proxies

The title of this post almost says it all! But essentially I am looking 
for some guidance as to how to edit UHD on a 1080p timeline using 
proxies. I have tried a number of methods and at times thought I have 
cracked it, but then have a moment of doubt as to whether the results 
are quite as good as they could be!

In most editors, in which I have done this before, I have just set up a 
1920 x 1080 timeline/project and cropped in on the UHD footage as 
required, (the business of the proxies and timeline resolution sees to 
handled in the background for you). Am I correct in understanding that 
when working in Kdenlive with proxies I need to set my project settings 
to match the resolution of the proxy files rather than resolution of 
the original files or the intended resolution of the rendered output?

I have experimented with using proxies scaled to 960, as this makes the 
maths of cropping in easier, and setting my timeline to 960x540. Then 
when rendering I scale to 1920x1080. I think(?) this works but would be 
very glad of some input from anybody else who could comment with more 
authority.

I am making a video of mostly pictures and some Video. When Kdenlive it 
starts for a couple of seconds and then crashes.  I opened kdenlive in 
the Terminal and below is the error.   I guess this error is shutting 
the program down?  Can someone help with a solution?  This is the last 
entry so am guessing this is the problem. I have a 30 minutes of video 
not far from finished so don't want to loose it.   Thanks for any help I 
have little Knowledge of terminal use so will need a detailed solution 
if possible.   Doug Pollard

Hi Doug,

Did you try to get help on the forum first? It is a more appropriate place...

Can you give more details about distribution you use, Kdenlive version (+MLT version, Qt version, available in the Help/About dialog).
Then we may help you to install an update or a debug version to get more info to solve the problem.

    Thanks Vincent I should have thought of the Forum first there is a
