I used to be tempted as well with "optimising Linux for my machine". But the truth is brilliantly described here: http://en.tiraecol.net/modules/comic/comic.php?content_id=162 :-D

Furthermore, imagine that you optimised a package for your machine. But an update arises that makes even "the binary for a 386 of the new version" be better than "your previous version optimised for your machine". You have to update and recompile! :-) Can you be aware of the updates for all the programmes, unless you use a distro?

Furthermore, compiling all they long will have an effect on your electricity bills...(I am not kidding, I did not try it myself, but I read that).

Distros, yeah: I am impartial, but impartiality does not mean "middle point and not committing oneself". So, impartially, I would recommend you tu use Debian. The smoothest one, even the sid (unstable) release, as long as you learn the routine of package management and maintenance.

Furthermore, regarding your question, Debian is quite faithful to the upstream.

Yes, there are other very cool distros, but cf. Mat 7:24-27 "Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like
a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and
he floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did
not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone
who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a
foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell,
and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house,
and it fell, and great was the fall of it."

The long-lasting things are the things built on rock. I am using Debian for more than one year, upgrading every day, and I did not have to make a single reinstallation (of course, you face some problems, as everywhere, but nothing so far that prevented me from working).
